Renew. Recommit. Rise.

As we stand here today, a sense of community seems more distant than ever. Fragmented by specialization, technology, and societal divisions, the very essence of coming together for the greater good appears threatened. Yet, it is in these comfortable and challenging times that the mission of AMAOPS becomes ever more crucial.

Helen Keller once said, "Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much." This sentiment serves as a powerful reminder of the strength we find in community. As spouses and partners of osteopathic physicians, we have a unique opportunity to bridge this gap and foster a more holistic approach to healthcare.

The medical landscape is undergoing a rapid transformation. The future of medicine lies not merely in technological advancements, but in creating places of overall healing and care. This necessitates a shift in focus from illness to wellness, a perspective that naturally aligns with the core philosophy of osteopathic medicine.

The osteopathic profession stands at the forefront of this movement. Trained to incorporate the mind, body, and spirit into treatment plans, osteopathic physicians offer a more balanced approach to healthcare. This holistic perspective, one that integrates the philosophies of naturopathic and allopathic medicine, allows osteopaths to build trust with patients and foster a spirit of collaboration within the broader medical field.

This trust, this sense of community, is precisely what we must cultivate in our society. We must honor the traditions established by the Auxiliary over the past 89 years. However, we must also acknowledge the changing landscape of the medical field. Our membership body is vastly different than the founders could have imagined.

Looking forward, it is vital that we share the mission of the AAOA: "to teach, advocate and research the science, art and philosophy of osteopathic medicine, emphasizing the integration of osteopathic principles, practice and manipulative treatment in patient care."

But how do we ensure this message resonates with the diverse generations currently practicing medicine? The answer lies in emphasizing the unique value proposition of osteopathy while acknowledging the varied needs and preferences of each generation.

For all generations, the holistic focus on preventive and wellness-centered care offered by osteopathy is highly relevant. This aligns with the growing societal desire for personalized medicine and patient-centered approaches. Additionally, the collaborative spirit inherent in osteopathy, where different medical philosophies can work together, is an attractive solution to complex medical challenges.

To truly connect, we need to provide educational resources, research updates, and advocacy materials in a variety of formats. The youngest practicing physicians within the osteopathic field take for granted the liberties and recognition they receive a physicians and in many instances do not understand the fundamental differences of their medical training to their allopathic counterparts. Online articles, podcasts, webinars, and engaging social media content catering to the diverse learning styles and information consumption preferences of different generations can help encourage osteopaths across various professions to share their stories and their insights into how being an osteopath was exactly what made the difference in treating their patients and making positive changes through collaboration across various medical disciplines. Hybrid events with both in-person and virtual participation options provide geographical flexibility and cater to those who prefer online learning.

The value of osteopathy extends beyond patient care. The very philosophy that underpins this approach to medicine offers a potential solution to the epidemic of physician burnout plaguing the medical profession. Osteopathy emphasizes self-care and a work-life balance, principles that are crucial for the well-being of healthcare providers. By promoting these principles within AMAOPS and advocating for them within the broader medical community, we can help create a system that supports the well-being of patients, physicians, and their families.

By implementing these strategies, AMAOPS can become a vibrant and relevant organization for all generations of medical professionals. It can be a platform for learning, collaboration, and fostering a sense of community built on the unique strengths and values of osteopathic medicine.Together, let us renew the spirit of community, recommit to bridging the divides, and rise to a new era of healthcare focused on patient well-being, physician wellness, and innovation.
