Yellow Ribbon Program
Dar and Dale Emme are two wonderful, ordinary people who were called to do an
extraordinary deed for our youth. Out of their grief over their son Mike's suicide
on September 8, 1994, The Light For Life Yellow Ribbon Program International
was born. This program was adopted at the AAOA House of Delegates in 1997.
The Auxiliary's role in partnering with the Yellow Ribbon Program is to help
get a Yellow Ribbon Card to every young person in the world through Yellow Ribbon
Presentations. The purpose is to get every adult to recognize that when a Yellow
Ribbon Card is presented to them, they need to respond by seeing that individual
get the help they are asking for.
The Yellow Ribbon Program is a vehicle for youth to break down the barriers of silence and connect with others. Our children are not trying to end their life, they are trying to end the pain! Yellow Ribbon cards give a voice to youth who otherwise might be lost to suicide. They give permission for our youth to talk about a broken heart just as they would a broken arm. Yellow Ribbon cards tell teens who are thinking about suicide "DO NOT DO THIS."
Every 100 seconds a teen dies of suicide. Each suicide represents 100 youth suicide attempts.
Over 250,000 cards have been distributed throughout the United States and 23 countries around the world. The AAOA has also distributed almost 1 million book covers across the United States.
The Yellow Ribbon Web site www.yellowribbon.org receives over 200 hits a day
AMAOPS adopted the Light for Life Foundation's Yellow Ribbon Program for Teen Suicide Prevention as a project.
Book covers with information about the program as well as Osteopathic Medicine have been distributed to Missouri
high schools. In addition, AMAOPS has sponsored programs and assisted a Yellow Ribbon Chapter.
The purpose of the D. O. Care Fund, is to "distribute funds for charitable, educational, and scientific purposes that promote
and support Osteopathic Medicine." Since it's inception in 1993, over $10,000 has been given for research, hospital library,
Still National Osteopathic Museum, and book covers.
